A Message from Kelly

Welcome to The Copywriting Connection! This week we are discussing how you appear to your prospects. Decisions are made based on appearances. It's a fact. Read this week's feature article, and then do an honest appraisal of how you appear to people when they first meet you. Professional, casual, or slovenly?

I just got home from a toastmasters meeting. I signed up late last year and stopped going when summer vacation started back in June. I went back today and did a speech that involved me being acutely aware of my body language. It's funny how much harder things are when you are focusing on them, or focusing on not doing them. I get paid to speak and train professionally, and I do a good job. I know I can do better. That's why I joined toastmasters. As much as I have 8 million things to do today, and wanted to cancel my talk at the last minute, I didn't. I made a commitment to do this and I intend to finish. And I am going to keep working on my "umm's" and not putting my fingers together when I talk.

Happy Copywriting!

Prospects Judge Books by Their Cover

You've heard the saying... "Don't judge a book by its cover". Well the fact is that we, as copywriters, are judged by our appearances and demeanor before any contact is made.

Do you think prospects hire copywriters based on their appearance? You bet they do! Whether it's your online "cover" or your in person "cover", prospects are looking and making judgments about the quality of the work you do. They are making these judgments by what you look like and how professional and polished you appear.

Do you appear sloppy and unprofessional? Many people will interpret that as not high quality and infer that you produce an inferior product.

Do you always look professional and have a business-like demeanor? Prospects probably expect the same quality from you in the work you produce. In fact, many people expect to pay top dollar for that professionalism as well.

Take a look at the quality of your website, the clothes you wear to meetings and networking events, and the work that you do.

If someone was to judge your book by the cover, would they buy it?

Would you?

Copywriters Challenge

We challenge you to do an honest appraisal of how you look. Not now, but when you are in public. Are your clothes wrinkly, are your nails cleaned? Have you paid attention to the little details? People judge a book by it's cover -- you are the cover. Make them want to buy you.
